Last month we were asked by the lovely Patricia from Search Laboratory to support an event that she organised on behalf of Lighthouse Union. Lighthouse School Leeds is a school for children with autism spectrum conditions. The school employs specialist teachers and is backed by the Department of Education. In November 2015 Lighthouse Union Store opened, a cafe and shop that provides opportunities for young adults with special educational needs and disabilities in order for them to gain valuable work experience.
In May 2016 Lighthouse Union organised a Speed Friending Event.

The 16 Leeds based bloggers who got invited were asked to wear masks with a picture of themselves printed on. The event was then held similarly to a speed date night. However, for this speed friending exercise, everyone was asked to avoid gestures and body language. The idea was to understand people with autism spectrum conditions a little better and get a feeling for how a typical conversation feels for them. If you would like to read more about the event and how it went, read on here. Daniel from Bone Idol Fitness, one of the bloggers who took part, wrote an insightful summary of his experience.
The wonderful Jennie from Life styled by Jennie, another blogger who took part in the event, wrote about her experience here.
Us Bloom Bakers didn’t actually take part, but our biscuits did. Patricia contacted us as they needed products to put in their goodie bags for the attending bloggers. Since we thought very highly of the cause and the event, we donated 16 bags of our handmade vanilla and jam sandwich biscuits. The bloggers seemed to receive them well and the event was a success!
